NGO urges NBMA to foster communication with communities

A Non-governmental Organization, Climate and Sustainable Development Network, CSDevNet has urges the National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA to promote conversations within communities on the importance of generated modified organisms, GMOS.

The Admin and Finance Officer, CSDEVNET, Umoru Ameh said this during an advocacy visit to the National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA in Abuja.

He said involving Local communities plays a huge role in the acceptance of generated modified organisms GMOs in Nigeria.


While addressing concerns related to the environmental and health implications of genetically modified crops, he said, “There is need for transparent communication with the public”.

In her remarks, Acting Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, NBMA, Scholastica Bello appreciated CSDevNet for their effort in promoting sustainable use of biodiversity.

She highlighted some of the challenges the agency faced, which includes, manpower limitations, lack of adequate support, inter-agency conflicts, and limited funding, among others.

Stressing on the importance of modern technology, Bello said the agency is focused on its role to promote biodiversity conservation through its three key mandates; conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing.
