DR. JOSEPH AWOLOLA
Dr. Joseph Awolola is the founder, President Society for Telemedicine and eHealth in Nigeria. He is the first Nigerian to become member of the International Society for Telemedicine and ehealth (Switzerland), member Africa Telehealth Group Canada.
He was born on 7 April 1975. He attended National Electric Power Authority Senior Staff School Kainji, New Bussa for his primary education (80-86), Federal Government College Ido-ani, Ondo state for his secondary school education (86-92) and proceeded to the University of Ilorin, kwara state to study medicine, graduated January 2000 with a degree in Medicine (MB;BS). He attended International conference/course on Telemedicine & eHealth April 2005 in Luxexpo, Luxembourg.
Academic and Professional areas of Interest includes Telemedicine & eHealth, General Medical and Family Health, Public Health, Sports Medicine and Scientific Research.
Current Activities in the field of Telemedicine:
1) His activities as an individual member in the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth got him the mandate to form ehealth association in Nigeria to represent Nigeria as National member to facilitate dissemination of knowledge in Telemedicine and ehealth and to provide access to experts in Nigeria.
2) Founded Society for Telemedicine and ehealth in Nigeria (SFTeHIN) April 2005, became National Representative Member July 2005.
3) His activities in Africa Telehealth Group Canada led to the establishment of Regional Telemedicine center in Nigeria, West Africa.
4)Established collaboration with the, WHO Collaborating Center on Telemedicine, Norway to help with training, research and projects on developing Telemedicine in Nigeria.
5) He is one of the organisers, Pan African Conference on Telemedicine and eHealth (PACTe) 19-21 June 2006, International Conference Center Abuja, Nigeria.

Mission
Introduction of Telemedicine and creation of e Health network in Nigeria for the aim of providing the national medical community and the general population with a rapid, reliable and cost effective way of healthcare delivery services; medical education including research, development, practical application and supplementary training to promote national health telematics particularly telemedicine and e-Health.
Motto: Technology for Improving National Health
Objectives:
Support co-operation between non-governmental organisations / institutions and governmental institutions / organisations in implementing national telemedicine and e-Health strategy in Nigeria. Support national telemedicine and e-Health programs. Promote the cause of telemedicine and e-Health within public and private health institutions within Nigeria and other International Institutions / organisations. Contribute initial and supplementary theoretical training in the field of telemedicine and e-Health, including its application throughout the health sector regardless of professional or geographical limits. Bring together telemedicine and e-Health users, Scientists, researchers, sponsors, advisers, manufacturers, distributors and their scientific personnel. Promote the formulation and publication of rules for good practice and guidelines and information on the course of action. Support activities relating to establishment of appropriate legal outline, conditions for telemedicine and e Health applications in Nigeria.
Activities:
Network with international telemedicine and e-Health communities. Dissemination of information and creation of awareness on telemedicine and e-Health issues in Nigeria via the society’s websites. Participation in working groups in Nigeria to promote extensive use of existing standards such as DICOM, HL7. Offering assistance on legal matters bordering on telemedicine and e-Health. Open dialogue and co-operation between industry in Nigeria to promote the development of innovative products, solutions, and services in telemedicine and e-health. Offering special discounts for adverts and publications in the Society’s official scientific Journal ‘Digest of Telemedicine and Telehealth (DTT) to members.
